Supporting our clients during a global pandemic

By Jenny Dunn, Communications Manager

Every community in the world has been effected by COVID-19.  For all of us life has changed dramatically.

We are working tirelessly with our partners on the ground to best support our clients at this time.  The challenges of lockdowns and social distancing mean we have to do things differently and adapt our projects.  Your support is helping us do this, ensuring that our clients can still provide for their family and build a secure future.

One such project is ‘Roots of Change’ in Ghana and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).  Back in 2018, your generous donations were matched by the UK government, enabling us to begin a three-year project to support the economic empowerment of rural women.  Many of these women live in incredibly remote communities, hours from the nearest town.

Here is a snapshot of how we have been supporting them and their families during this global pandemic:

  • Approximately 300,000 people received COVID-19 information through six community radios in Ghana to counter the fear and spread of inaccurate information about the pandemic. Similar radio broadcasts are on-going in the DRC with the hope of reaching 750,000 people in rural communities.

  • Mobile phones are being given to vulnerable women in remote rural communities who previously had no access to and/or mobile phone. This will enable them to access financial services and support digitally, ensuring that no one is left behind.

  • We are working with agricultural experts in Ghana to see how we can deliver virtual agricultural training for women so that they can continue improving their farms and harvest.

  • Over 2,000 face masks, hand sanitisers and other hygiene kits have been distributed to rural women and entrepreneurs.

None of this would have been possible without your support.  Thank you for helping us to keep serving our clients during the most challenging of times.
