Jameson

Country: Malawi

Jameson is a farmer from Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world. With support and training from Opportunity International, he is growing his business and income so that he can provide for a better life for his family.

Jameson is a husband and father to two children. He joined a Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) where he can discuss his business and share ideas with group members. He and his VSLA were given training and support from Opportunity International. Through this training, Jameson gained essential knowledge and skills in finance, business and agriculture, enabling him to grow his business, increase his income, build resilience, and plan for the future.

Before joining, I had no vision or culture of saving but now I run a successful farming business and manage to save.

Farming is Jameson's primary source of income, meaning his land is crucial to his family's wellbeing. When Cyclone Freddy hit Malawi in 2023, he was devastated to find out that part of his farm, and a portion of his income, was washed away. However, thanks to training in agriculture from Opportunity, he learnt how to better prepare for future climate shocks and maximise his farm's potential. Jameson has also invested in some livestock so that he has an alternative income stream to safeguard his family's future.

With the income from sweet potato harvest sales, I have already paid a deposit on chickens as well as pigs.

Jameson and his group members were also connected to experienced businesswomen in the community, who mentored them and provided support. Learning from his mentor has helped Jameson sharpen his skills, and now he feels confident and ready to guide others as a mentor himself.

As a man, it is rare to be coached by a woman. But I have learned a lot from my female mentors, and even the other men who used to laugh at me, now want to join in.

Jameson is now looking ahead to his and his family's future. He hopes to expand his farm and employing others in his community, as well as making improvements to his home. Above all, he wants to cover his children’s school fees, ensuring that they receive a quality education and a bright future.

My daughter aspires to become a doctor, while my son would like to become an army officer. As a parent this feels good, and I encourage my children to continue to focus on their education.
