Alice

Country: Rwanda

Alice is a farmer from Rwanda. With access to savings, loans and training, Alice has been able to transform her farm and diversify her income. Now she is able to contribute to her household income and provide a better life for her children.

Alice lives in Rwanda with her husband and two children. Before Alice met Opportunity International, she didn’t have any experience of financial planning. She was encouraged by a mentor to join a savings group that was run by Opportunity International.

Since joining, she has learnt to save and set goals, and she has been given the opportunity to take out loans. Alice was also given training in agriculture and how to invest in her farm.

Before I started farming, I didn’t know how to cultivate, but when we joined the savings group, we were trained in agriculture, and how to take out a loan and use it.

With her savings, Alice invested in her farm and bought chickens and cattle, diversifying her income, and she has also been able to employ someone to help her on her farm.

Before, I grew little, but now the yield has gradually increased.

With the income generated, Alice has been able to make improvements to her house, get family health insurance and buy clothes for her children. She has also been able to become economically independent and play an equal role alongside her husband contributing to her household income.

Since I’ve joined the programme, I’ve gained confidence. I feel like the future will be good, my children will study and achieve great things. I’ll save for them and strive for them to get somewhere better than my family.
