More than 70% of people in Africa live in rural areas and rely on the land to provide for their family.
In 2014, our Seeds of Opportunity appeal sought to highlight this need and raise money to do something about it. Together, in partnership with the UK government, who matched all individual donations, we raised a staggering £6million!
YOUR generosity helped provide much needed loans, savings accounts and training to thousands of men and women across Africa. Your gifts were matched by the UK government, and one of the projects it supports is providing farmers in Ghana and Mozambique with tailored agricultural financial services.
Farmers are growing their farms and income, enabling them to run more efficient farms, produce a variety of crops and start selling commercially so they can plan beyond the day-to-day for a sustainable future for their family.
THANK YOU for helping so many farmers and communities work towards a better future!
Rebecca Luis, Mozambique
"I have learned how to prepare my farm, sow the seeds and ensure my produce is clean and free from pesticides." Rebecca has been growing maize, beans and cassava since she was 14. She wants to use the profit from her farm to support her children’s education; she hopes that a good education will enable them to secure better jobs and life in the future.
Lucia Antono, Mozambique
Lucia, a 43-year-old mother from Gurué, Mozambique received a loan and financial training from Opportunity International, enabling her to support her family with regular meals and to pay her children’s school fees. “After my husband divorced me I had many challenges. I had to pay my children’s school fees, my house was falling down and my business wasn’t going very well. Opportunity International gave me a loan and helped me to do a business plan and learn how to save money each month to cover my loan. My business is now doing well and my children are in school.”
