Microfinance for children
“This is a wonderful story that engaged all children and produced many outstanding learning opportunities.”
Steve Williams, Headteacher, Kelsall Community Primary School

How One Hen changed a community

Children's book 'One Hen' tells the inspirational story of Kojo, a boy from Ghana who uses one small loan to buy a hen, build up his business, transform his family’s life and provide a livelihood for generations of villagers.

Interactive website One Hen

The book is supplemented by an interactive website www.OneHen.org.uk, where children play interactive games to learn about microfinance and teachers can download teaching materials.

“One Hen teaches kids that one person can make a difference in the lives of many. The story educates children about entrepreneurship, finance and giving everyone a chance.”

Katie Smith Milway, author of One Hen

Not just a story…

The story of Kojo is inspired by the remarkable life of Dr. Kwabena Darko, now one of the largest poultry farmers in West Africa and on the board of directors of Opportunity International Ghana, who began his business career with one loan and one hen just like Kojo.

Bringing the story to life in school

Children at Kelsall Community Primary School have been using the One Hen story to learn about the impact a small loan can have on the lives of individuals and their families.

“The One Hen story provided many experiential, cross-curricular and creative learning experiences and also addressed all of the Every Child Matters learning outcomes!”
Steve Williams, Headteacher, Kelsall Community Primary School

The One Hen story prompted an exciting learning opportunity for the children in school. They created an African garden and built a traditional hut; explored the principles behind achieving economic well being; wrote letters to Kojo; designed their own money-spinning ideas; and even hired an incubator and watched in awe as 12 little chicks hatched.
