Our global network

Opportunity UK is part of the Opportunity International Network, one of the world’s largest microfinance organisations.

The network is a global coalition of over 40 partner organisations working throughout Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America.

The Network strategy

To help ensure that financial services are more accessible to the world’s poor, the Network has embarked on an ambitious strategy to give a 'hand up' to over 1 million people in Africa by end 2012.

Supporters include The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and The Mastercard Foundation, among others.

How does it work?

The Network combines worldwide reach and local expertise, uniting five supporting organisations and over 40 implementing partners into a single affiliation with a common mission and vision. Together, they are dedicated to providing opportunities for people living in poverty to transform their lives.

Five ‘support partners’ raise funds in the developed world

Opportunity International UK is one of the five Network 'support partners'. We raise and invest funds to establish and strengthen microfinance organisations, acting as an advocate for the poor and increasing awareness of programmes within the developed world (Australia, Canada, Germany, the UK and USA).

Our 'implementing partners' manage programmes locally

Working in 20+ countries, over 40 microfinance partner institutions implement and manage our programmes on the ground. They employ local staff who work directly with clients and operate under the supervision of a qualified, volunteer board of directors.

The Opportunity International Network

The Network oversees the operations, standards, quality and programmes of all partners.

The Network also:

  • Monitors all partner financial information and collects and publishes them in a quarterly journal. Partners must remain accountable to the network to receive funding.
  • Has developed training and technical service divisions. These divisions provide expertise in banking, operations, methodology, and research cutting edge tools to deal with global issues like HIV/AIDS.
