Our vision & mission

“Nearly three billion poor people in developing countries lack access to the basic financial services needed to help them manage their precarious lives.” (CGAP)

Opportunity International UK is a member of the global Opportunity International Network, a pioneer and global leader in providing microfinance and training to the working poor.

Our vision

Our vision is a world in which all people have the opportunity to provide for their families and build a fulfilling life.

Our mission

Our mission is to provide opportunities for people in poverty to transform their lives, by providing access to sustainable financial services (micro loans, savings and insurance) and training so they can unlock their own potential and begin to work their way out of poverty.

Our difference

  1. We exist to help poor people to transform their own lives (we use loans, saving, insurance, training and vision building to tap into poor people’s human spirit). It’s a Hand Up, not a hand out.
  2. We don’t stop with microcredit. As well as small loans, we provide people with access to secure savings accounts, micro insurance, financial education and training to strengthen their businesses and build for the future.
  3. We use a model that will enable us to do microfinance on a large scale basis. We not prepared to just scratch the surface of poverty. It’s a big scar on the world’s conscience.
  4. We are intent on sustainability.
  5. Donations are recycled. Because the loans we give are repaid and lent out again, donations we receive are constantly at work.

Our motivation

Opportunity International was founded by two highly successful entrepreneurs who, as Christians, wanted to love their neighbours and serve the poor. Whilst Opportunity International is a Christian organisation, we serve people of all faiths and those of no faith and honour people’s religious traditions and their freedom to choose whether or not to be part of any particular faith.

Our core values

Respect
We operate on the basis of respect for all people. In particular we aim to value fully each client and to affirm their dignity and uniqueness. This respect is also the foundation for our relationships with our clients' communities and our relationships with others involved in our work - supporters, suppliers and colleagues.

Commitment to the Poor
We focus our energy and efforts on our clients, their families and their communities. Their needs and expectations determine the services we provide, and their well-being inspires what we do. We are committed to working with poor people to help them improve their lives and communities.

Integrity
We commit to ensuring that what we believe is consistent with what we do. We will do the right things for the right reasons, whether or not anyone will know.

Stewardship
We are committed to being good stewards of our own resources and those of our clients, supporters, suppliers and colleagues by exercising a thoughtful and cost effective use of the time, skills and finances we have. We strive for quality and seek to maximise the opportunities we have to fulfil our mission.
