Tens of thousands are feared dead following the devastating earthquake which shook Haiti last week.
Opportunity International has a relationship with Fonkoze, Haiti’s largest microfinance institution.
During recent years, Opportunity International’s Management Information Services Division (MIS) has been assisting Fonkoze with its computer systems.
The MIS team has been in contact with Fonkoze during the past week, providing advice on recovery of their banking operation computer systems.
Opportunity’s partner, ASPIRE, in the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, is already working to provide aid across the border.
Fonkoze are posting updates on their website. Please click here for the latest reports.
Aid from the earthquake will help the country for some time, but Haiti needs significant and long term reinvestment and reconstruction.
Opportunity International has seen the role that microfinance can play in helping families and communities to rebuild after a natural disaster, and are convinced that microfinance will play a role here too when the country begins to rebuild.
If you would like to respond to the crisis in Haiti we recommend that you donate to the Disasters Emergency Committee. This way, as a UK tax payer, your donation will be automatically increased by 28% at no cost to you.
The DEC will make sure that funds are distributed to experienced organisations we respect and support like World Vision, Tear Fund, CAFOD, Oxfam and Save the Children.
