"Rebecca Constable from Newbury, Berkshire, has been giving to Opportunity International UK for about ten years.
The charity arranges microfinance — providing small loans and support — to help people in developing countries to work their way out of poverty.
She says: “I like the fact that the charity offers a hand-up rather than a handout. There’s a 98 per cent repayment rate, which means that each pound I give works over and over again. I find that incredibly powerful.”
Mrs Constable, a senior private banker with SG Hambros, says that she gives by monthly direct debit so that her donations are tax-efficient.
“Regular giving is also a good reminder of my commitment to the charity.”
She keeps track of the charity’s work at its website, opportunity.org.uk, and via newsletter, and enjoys reading individual success stories."
