We measure and monitor our impact on clients, such as increases in household assets and children’s school attendance, improved health and women’s empowerment. In short, we apply a business mentality to our social, not-for-profit mission
4. Accountability
For the same reason, we pride ourselves on being transparent and accountable. Increasingly as we establish or convert our field operations to be regulated financial institutions, we subject ourselves to the rigours of the local country’s Central Bank
5. Sustainability
With our approach, Opportunity’s global microfinance operations become sustainable. This ensures ongoing growth and creates self-sufficiency
6. Scale
One of the reasons we are setting up regulated facilities is to give us the capability to serve millions of poor people. As Non Governmental Organisations, our partners can serve many thousands of people but never the millions in need of microfinance. As banks, they can offer more than loans to provide a range of financial services, and expand operations to reach many more people
7. Financial inclusion
Some of the poorest people live in the most remote areas. We have a mission to reach them and work with local partners to develop innovative solutions that keep transaction costs very low. For instance, our use of biometric technology in Malawi. Few organisations are as innovative as Opportunity and world-leading technology is making financial inclusion a reality for millions
8. Vision
Tying all that together, we believe that our vision is challenging yet achievable and inspiring. We’d be thrilled if you partnered with us to give a 'hand up' to over 1 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa by end 2012.
